Greetings everyone!! It’s me, Isabella Ali Rottenstein, the six-year old Ninja☆. Right now, I’m in the middle of practicing my ability to cling to the ceiling♪. But the truth is, I’m in a bit of a pickle at the moment⇊.
Why, you ask? Well, that would be because the ceiling I’m clinging to is none other than…
“Master Shaun, I’m being serious!! Please don’t treat me like a child. My feelings aren’t just some spontaneous delusion…”
“Even if you ask that of me, Marie… I am but an old man, as you can see—even my son is older than you. You are a very kind and charming young lady, which is why I’m sure you’ll be able to live a long life together with a young, reliable man of your own age…”
“But I!! I just… want you, Master Shaun. I don’t want anyone but you, Master Shaun…”
“Even if our time together is short, I want nothing more than to stay by your side every day.”
……… Not good. I can’t get off the ceiling. All due to the cheap soap opera unfolding below me, which consisted of our family’s young maid, Marie-chan, and bespectacled butler, Shaun-san. Shaun-san’s wife died early in their relationship, leaving him to raise their only son by himself. Now the son, much like his father, is working for our family as an apprentice butler. Shaun-san is an attractive middle-aged man on the cusp of retiring and leaving his work to his son, but to think something like this would happen!! Honestly speaking, because of their age difference, Marie-chan and Shaun-san looked more like a grandfather and his granddaughter.
It’s all well and good, but thanks to them I can’t get off the ceiling———!! 《Presence Obfuscation》 is good, but it’s not good enough for me to jump down from the ceiling, cut between them, open the door, and leave without being noticed. Besides, even if I were to somehow miraculously go unnoticed, I feel like I’d be ruining the current mood somehow. Although the Duke’s daughter being stuck on the freaking ceiling probably ruined it already!!
In any case, moving isn’t an option. I don’t exist in this room. That’s right, I don’t exist. I became one with the air, stilling my movements. Visiting the little girl’s room will have to wait—for right now I must persevere.
But still… of all the places they could be doing this, why did they have to choose the room where I was practicing my spying skills? It wasn’t my intention to have my espionage practice turn into on-the-job training. So… awkward. And I really need to pee.
Hurry up Shaun and give up; just give up and get together with Marie already! Marie wasn’t a girl without any worries, and yet here she was facing Shaun with a heart full of conviction . She was making it clear her feelings weren’t half-hearted….But the truth is, the man in question probably already understood that himself!!
… Ugh, this is so vexing. But I still can’t afford to get off the ceiling just to admonish Shaun. A duke’s daughter dropping in from the ceiling would kill the mood. It would be absolutely ruined; thoroughly destroyed. I am one with the air. Yes, the air. I do not exist in this room. I can hang in there for just a bit more. But the bathroom is sounding real good right about now.
“Those two… even after 30 more minutes of them bickering back and forth, nothing changed!!” Thankfully their talks had ended there and so I ran my little heart out getting to the bathroom, just barely making it in time. It wasn’t until I was washing my hands afterwards that I was able to vent my frustrations .
Shockingly, my full speed dash to the bathroom had generated a force with enough pressure to shatter three panes of glass in the hallway!! So dangerous!! With my maxed out HP, the shockwave just from running past the glass was enough to break it!! What am I, a fighter jet?! I don’t think I should run indoors anymore…
And, now that I think about it, I’m not in any position to be criticizing Marie and Shaun’s relationship. My relationship with Ursch-kun hasn’t seen any progress as of late either. He easily accepted my proposal the day we met, but now the real question is: how does he truly feel about me??
After all, he was suddenly proposed to by a girl whom he’d just met… Maybe he wasn’t thinking straight and had just accepted it on a whim? But now, with our parents involved and him formally declared as my betrothal candidate, he’d surely be feeling confused right about now? For me, if at all possible, I want Ursch-kun to love me mutually before we get married. All I need is some time to show him my womanly charms and then I’ll have him completely lovestruck, yet…
Well, I do have this stereotypical ninja espionage power now, so maybe I should just sneak out and go see him? Rather than bring Ursch-kun here, to the Ducal mansion, where he would feel like an outsider, it would be better to meet him somewhere he’s more used to—that way he won’t have to feel so pressured and we’ll be able to converse more naturally. But… where exactly is Ursch-kun’s house? Maybe I can find him if I pay a visit to the Schneiver Company?
────Hello again. It’s been three days. I’ve been using 《Presence Obfuscation》 to shadow Marie-chan as she heads North in the commercial district. Last night I gave Marie-chan a letter addressed to Ursch-kun, and today she’s out delivering it. I’ve been secretly following her from the mansion, it was my brilliant plan to finally locate Ursch-kun’s home!!
I was proud of my little plan, but to the casual onlooker, I was probably little more than a stalker. HOWEVER, I am Ursch-kun’s (provisional) fiance, so it should be just fine…
The plan was working flawlessly, with one exception: Marie-chan. Her steps were heavy and, when she’d stop for a breath, she’d stare off—her gaze distant. After the incident three days ago, Shaun-san has been subconsciously avoiding Marie-chan. Ever since then, sighing had become commonplace for Marie-chan as she became more and more lethargic everyday. She’d walk with a slow and heavy gait, barely paying attention to her surroundings.
“Is Marie going to be all right? It’s not exactly safe to be that distracted…”
“She won’t~. Especially since it’s morning, so a lot of people are out and about. It’s dangerous, you know.” There weren’t many stores open on the commerce road yet, but the town was still bustling with people prepping their shops and moving wares around. Animals crossing the road had driven the wagons to an annoying standstill. With chickens crossing on one side and sheep on the other, there was nowhere for them to go.
Freshly made bread dotted the displays of a nearby bakery. The smell was tantalizing, especially since I haven’t had breakfast yet. Loud voices could be heard here and there as people bartered with each other, intermingling with the sound of wooden boxes being stacked and sorted. The town was filled with life, and the noisy liveliness wasn’t bothersome at all. Rather, I quite enjoyed it.
“It’s true, seeing the city in person as opposed to from the inside of a carriage is much different. There’s certainly a lot of hustle and bustle.” I took my wandering eyes off the city and returned them to Marie-chan, just in time to see her bump into a wooden pull cart. She looked like she was about to fall over, but she just barely managed to steady herself in time!! And thus she continued, still not paying attention… Come on now.
“She’s not paying attention to her surroundings at all! Even the old man with the pull cart is smiling mockingly at her!!”
“I wonder if she can reach her destination like that? Where is that girl even going?”
“She’s headed towards Ursch’s home. She’s delivering my letter to him.” In that state, I wonder how long it will take her to return to the mansion after finishing her delivery.
“I see~. But, she passed that house quite a ways back, you know~?”
“Eh?! Is that true?!” I loudly exclaimed at the surprising truth, forgetting I was in the middle of secretly following someone.
Unfazed by my sudden shout, Ursch-kun softly smiled as he pointed back the way we came. “Yep. If you walk back about 10 minutes that way there’s a blue sign on the corner by the bookseller, right? If you make a left at that crossroad… oh wait, it’d be a right from this direction. Anyway, you go that way and…”
Ohoho, I see, I see. You pass by the Schneiver Company’s brick warehouse and then five buildings down, on the third floor of the one with the green roof, is Ursch-kun’s home. Thank you ever so much for your kind and easily understandable directions. Now I can go visit Ursch-kun’s home!!
“……Wait just a moment…… Ursch, may I ask just how long you’ve been standing there?” Cause, you know, I’m using 《Presence Obfuscation》 right now. Even though this wealthy nobleman’s daughter is currently waltzing around town in a frilly dress, no one else has taken any notice. Even when I brazenly walked all the way from the front door to the mansion gate, not even the gatekeeper noticed, you know? Not only that, but to make sure a certain Duke’s daughter didn’t get kidnapped, I had both 《Sense Presence》 and 《Sense Magic》 activated. … And yet, here he was, right next to me.
“I’ve been with you for around 20 minutes, I guess? I have a special skill you see, that lets me mix myself into the company of strangers’ families to the point they don’t even notice when I eat a meal with them… so this much is easy.”
Ursch-kun. That makes you this world’s version of “Nurarihyon“. Ah, if I called Ursch-kun “Nurarihyon”, would he even know what I was talking about? Since it’s a Japanese youkai, he might not understand. But him “Entering people’s homes as he pleases, eating their food, drinking their tea, and having the homeowner perceive him as their own family,” was spot-on for Nurarihyon…
“Oh whatever shall I do… To think that you’ve been by my side for over 20 minutes and I never even noticed… I wonder if my love for you isn’t strong enough…”
“Nah~, I don’t think so. No matter where “My Possessions” are, I can always find them easily. That’s how I found you so fast. This is just another special skill of mine, so don’t be so sad.”
I see, Ursch-kun is the type to properly manage his belongings, so he’s also good at finding them. You’re amazing, Ursch-kun! You were meant to be a merchant! Also, he just casually referred to me as “his possession”, didn’t he? Didn’t he?! I can take that as he’s already accepted me as his bride then, right? Right? Even if I’m wrong, Ursch-kun is still my waifu!! Eh? What do you mean ‘that’s different’?
“By the way… that maid girl, she’s still walking… is that okay?”
“Ah…” I totally forgot about Marie-chan!! “Oh no!! I lost Marie!!”
Unlike the me who was freaking out, Ursch-kun just tilted his head as though I was acting strange. “Isn’t it fine? She’s just delivering a letter to my house, isn’t she? She’ll figure out sooner or later that she passed it and come back.”
Normally, yes. But the way she was acting, I was worried Marie-chan wouldn’t realize. I mean, she was already so spaced out she ran into a parked cart, you know? After I explained all that to him, Ursch-kun agreed to help me look for Marie-chan. And, to make sure we wouldn’t get separated on the busy streets, he held my hand. So sweet. You’re just too sweet, Ursch-kun. But, there was still one thing I was concerned about…
As I walked hand in hand with him, I caught a glimpse of something dangling from his waist. Um, Ursch-kun. Why do you have T-H-A-T attached to your hip, hmm?
“Hey, Isabella. What are we gonna do after we find her?”
I hurriedly snapped my gaze away from Ursch-kun’s hips as he spoke to me. Ah, that was close, too close. I’d be done for if he thought I was a pervert for ogling his hips. “I’m sorry? What do you mean by that?”
“You’re secretly tailing her, right, Isabella? So even if you find her, it’s not like you can talk to her. So what will you do then? Like, if she’s in danger, you won’t be able to just swoop in and save her, you know?”
A blind spot!! That’s right, not only was I secretly following her, but I’d also snuck out of the mansion!! Even if Marie-chan got herself into trouble, I couldn’t do anything more than watch!! Seriously, even if I chased her down at this point, what is there for me to do? I’d already achieved my initial goal of locating Ursch-kun’s home, so there’s no need to hunt down Marie-chan anymore. But, if I just left her to her own devices and she wound up getting hurt, I knew I’d regret it.
While I was busy agonizing, Ursch-kun just laughed and said there’s no helping it. In a way he was right, but even if there was nothing for me to do I’d still worry. Que sera sera and all that. Well, if anything happens we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. And so, with that thought in mind, Ursch-kun assisted me in looking for Marie-chan.
Ursch-kun was pretty easygoing for a 6-year old. If he was this easygoing now, he’d definitely be super popular when he got older. Urgh!! I won’t lose to other girls fawning over Ursch-kun!! Burning with fiery determination, we went on the hunt for Marie-chan.
Periodically, Ursch-kun would ask people on the road if they’d seen a maid walking around. By virtue of being the son of the biggest merchant in the area, he had many acquaintances. The townspeople he spoke with were all smiles as they interacted with Ursch-kun, so it looked like the Schneiver Company’s reputation was in good standing with the locals. Nice, very nice.
In high spirits, we continued hand in hand running around looking for Marie-chan. It was fun and all, but I didn’t want Ursch-kun to be annoyed if it took too long. Not to mention I was still worrying if anything had happened to Marie-chan. Time for 【Magic Eyes】 to do their part.
In truth, I’ve been spending the last several days trying out all sorts of things, and one such discovery was the ability to use two Magic Eyes at same time. Thus, I tried activating both 《Pride(Distant Sight)》 and 《Lust(Penetration)》, a combination of Clairvoyance and X-ray vision. The nice thing about 《Lust(Penetration)》 was that it only x-rayed what you wanted. Otherwise, I’d run the risk of seeing passerbys, or everyone really, in the nude.
This time, I used 《Lust(Penetration)》 to remove all buildings and obstacles within five meters from my field of vision. It was kinda funny seeing people on the second floors of buildings look like they were floating in the air. As for why it’d only go five meters: I’d limited it so that I’d know exactly where Marie-chan was without having to wonder where the heck my distant sight had seen her. In particular, because I was using 《Pride(Distant Sight)》 in conjunction with it, my sense of distance was shot. I’d forgotten until now just how useful a skill like this could be for finding people…
Now that I’ve found Marie-chan using these Magic Eyes… what should I do? I don’t know how I’d explain it to Ursch-kun… Because it’d be strange, right? Totally weird, right?! Cause if I suddenly said “I found Marie-chan two blocks to the right, in front of the fish seller,” the response would probably be something like “Seriously? How on earth did you know that?” Then just how would I explain without mentioning the 【Magic Eyes】?
No, wait a sec. I don’t really need to keep the 【Magic Eyes】 a secret from Ursch-kun, do I? He already knows about the 【Closet】, and he’s supposed to be my future husband, so wouldn’t it be a hassle in the future if I hid it now? Plus, I don’t want to have any secrets from my future husband!! …Though maybe I don’t have to tell him everything. Things like my King Kong-level HP, or the fact that I have memories of my past life should remain a secret. These are the only things my fragile maiden’s heart refused to reveal.
In any case, now that I’ve resolved to be candid when asked about the 【Magic Eyes】, I spoke to Ursch-kun as he was looking around the vicinity, “Ursch, I’ve located Marie two blocks to the right, in front of the fish seller.”
“Oh nice. Then we better catch up with her before she gets too far. Okay, let’s run!” After replying, he gripped my hand in his and off we dashed.
… Eh, wait wait wait!! You’re not even gonna ask how I knew?! I’m elated he took me at my word, but shouldn’t he be just a little more skeptical?! As I spaced out over Ursch-kun’s unexpected response, he continued to lead me by the hand while we ran through the city.
We followed after Marie-chan, keeping a distance of five meters. After we confirmed Marie-chan was safe, we agreed to shadow her until she delivered the letter to the Schneiver home. As for when she returns home… she’s on her own. I really wanted to ask her if she was even trying to delivery the letter, considering she’d been at it for over an hour, but I held my tongue and continued to follow her without any particular plan in mind.
We’d left home early this morning, but now it was almost noon. They had probably organized a search party for me back at the mansion by this point. My spy play had them desensitized to my disappearances, but if I were to miss the midday meal… there’d be hell to pay. I wondered if the excuse of “I fell asleep while I was trying to hide,” would fly?
I started getting bored of shadowing Marie-chan as she continued walking aimlessly, so I decided to ask Ursch-kun why he hadn’t asked me any questions about before. When I did so, he started laughing while pointing at my face.
“Ahaha~ It’s because of your face, Isabella. It doesn’t lie.”
My face doesn’t lie? What’s that mean? Seriously.
“See look, just like that~ You look like you still don’t understand what I’ve just said. It’s a~ll written on your face. From when you were worrying about your maid all the way to when you worried about revealing how you found her to me, I can see it all.”
I get it now!! As expected of a merchant’s son, he’s good at reading expressions!! And I guess my face was just that expressive…
“Though in truth, I really just want to believe in you Isabella. If even just one person in this world believes in you, and thinks <I know with absolute certainty this person will believe me>, I’m sure it would be the most wonderful feeling. And that’s exactly who I want to be to you, Isabella… or at least that’s what I’m hoping for.”
Ursch-kun… you put so much thought into it… It certainly was wonderful. “If they believe in me, I’ll believe them undoubtingly,” there isn’t a more reassuring phrase in the world, don’t you think? Ursch-kun basically told me he wants our relationship to be mutually trustworthy. But why? I mean, this is only the second time we’ve met! It made me wonder; what made him want to go so far?
Welp, even if I thought long and hard about it, I still wouldn’t get it. Thus I had no choice but to ask the man himself. “Ursch, why would you go so far for me when we’ve only just met?”
Ursch-kun gently smiled at my question. “So you’ll never leave me, of course. If we do this right, then you’ll never be able to cast me aside, you know?”
Wha-?! Ursch-kun, you’re starting to scare me!! That gentle, healing smile of yours suddenly looks dark!! What do you mean “so you’ll never leave me”?! There’s no reason I’d leave in the first place!! “Are you okay with being so honest about that? Surely there’s a better way to phrase that without stretching the truth too thin or putting someone on their guard?” I didn’t really mind since I wanted to know more about him anyways. Ah, then there really isn’t a problem, is there?
“There’s no meaning to making it sound nicer. If you can’t accept who I am, as I am, then we’ll certainly have a bumpy relationship~” He’s right. I don’t want us to live our lives pussyfooting around each other. “And you know, I still don’t know why you chose me. I know full well I’m not popular or attractive. I’m not sure if it was some misunderstanding or if you got the wrong impression of me, but I just want you to know the real me.”
“So that’s how you feel. I fell in love with you at first sight. At first glance, I knew you were the one. I’m sure most loves start out this way. I didn’t know you that well, but I knew that could be fixed in short order. I thought if we treat each other with respect, someday it will turn into an unconscious bond between us.” Well, I was referring to how I’d fallen in love at first sight in my previous life, but it wasn’t exactly a lie, so it was fine.
I only knew him from his appearance in-game, and just that alone was enough for me to shave years off of my life. I’d never had the chance to discover his personality or background while playing. Thanks to reincarnating though, I can now find out more about Ursch-kun. That alone was enough to make me happier than anything. Viva la Reincarnation!!
“No matter what my personality may be, you won’t run away, will you? You won’t leave me?”
“As long you don’t do anything outrageous like committing domestic violence, cheating, or accumulating copious amounts of gambling debt, everything will be just fine. I’m already so weak to your charms right now that I’d be willing to turn the other cheek and say it can’t be helped for anything else.” That was an Ursch-kun special though. Were it any other man I wouldn’t be able to overlook such hardships.
“I don’t think I’m that bad, but… it’s oddly specific… you wouldn’t happen to be talking about someone close to you, would you? Such a person…” The look Ursch-kun was giving me was so worried that I had no choice but to deny it while vigorously shaking my hands.
“N-no, of course not!! No one specifically; I’ve just heard stories about such people!!” Thinking about it, no other six year old in the world would use such a detailed example. I need to watch my words more carefully from now on. I couldn’t tell if my vehement denial had convinced him or not, but he dropped the subject anyways.
However, he did abruptly point his finger at me and spoke as though he’d suddenly remembered something. “By the way, it seems we’ve lost the maid again~ What do you wanna do? I honestly don’t care all that much unless it’s you getting hurt or lost.” Ursch-kun’s truly nefarious thoughts suddenly surfaced.
“Am I mistaken, or is your response quite a bit different from earlier?”
“It’s not really different, is it? I was helping you only because you looked worried. In all honesty I couldn’t care less about that girl we were following. After all, I don’t even know her.” Ursch-kun said that with a soft smile, as if it were the most normal response in the world.
My heart!! Even though his response was malicious, that smile was just too darn cute!! My heart, aching from his glowing smile, was absolutely and utterly demolished by that curious head tilt of his.
“Isabella, I think you’re the only one who would be so happy just from seeing my smile. Do you really like my looks that much?”
“Yes. In fact, if I could, I’d spend the rest of my life looking at you.”
“Well~ With an attitude like that then, no matter how despicable my personality is, the day you love me in my entirety isn’t far off then, is it?” My thoughts coincided with his, albeit leaving me with a bitter feeling. I felt as though my superficial reasons for being attracted to him were rather impudent. In the near future, I knew I’d be able to understand and accept Ursch-kun for who he. So please, just wait a little longer.
As for now though, it was time to recommence the search for the forgotten Marie-chan. It wasn’t actually necessary to watch over her, but were she to get hurt then both Shaun-san and I would regret it. Thus, the tailing once again began in earnest. Plus, Ursch-kun would be by my side until this little debacle reached a conclusion. Oh no, he’s just too cool!
I was feeling bad about dragging Ursh-kun around for my selfish desires, however. As such, I immediately whipped out 《Pride (Distant Sight)》 and 《Lust (Penetration)》 to assist in hastily locating her. Marie-chan had been haphazardly walking around with that absent mind of hers, so it wasn’t easy to predict where she’d wind up, but, at the very least, she at least should couldn’t have gotten very fa-…she got really far.
Marie-chan, you’re so far away~… So far I almost don’t even want to catch up to you~ At this rate, she won’t even make it back home for dinner. Marie-chan, stop wandering around and do your damn job. Geez, at this point the only reason I’m still chasing her down is to put a stop to this nonsense. I don’t even really care about her safety anymore. Yep, that’s right: I’m chasing her out of sher obstinance right now.
“How did… how did she even walk this far with her meandering?”
“Well you see, this and that happened with the person she likes and now he’s avoiding her. But I’d never expected Marie, who is normally steadfast and reliable, to be so affected by it that she starts wandering aimlessly like this.”
“Perhaps letting her have some time to just wander by herself is all she’ll need to return to normal. Just some nice, quiet walking.”
“Ursch, that’s nice and all, but aren’t you just getting bored from following her around?”
“Of course I am. From the bottom of my heart I can say I don’t give a damn about her or her love problems.”
I think I’m starting to slowly understand Ursch-kun’s disposition better. Like, he was the type that didn’t care about something if he didn’t have a vested interest.
As Ursch-kun and I had our little exchange, my eyes once again fell on his waist. I’ve been wondering about that thing swinging from his waist since I first laid eyes upon it… And now, with my newfound understanding of his darker personality traits, I was starting to think it fit him so well that it was scary. And that thing swinging from his waist was none other than…
A “whip”. And I’m not talking about some silly little riding crop, but a long leather whip. Like the kind used by an animal trainer, or an SM Queen—that length. Ursch-kun… you are a Merchant’s son, aren’t you? Not some son of an animal tamer? Do merchants even need whips?
Ursch-kun tilted his head as he caught me staring. “You’ve been staring at this since this morning. Do you want it?”
That would be a no. Why did he think I wanted it? It’d fit me way too well, being a villainess and all. “No thank you, I simply wanted to ask why you were carrying something like that around.”
“Ah, I just took it with me this morning because I was planning on practicing with it”
Why?! Just what on earth… Do all merchants need to learn how to use whips? The combination of Ursch-kun and a whip was super scary, and made my imagination run wild.
“Hey. Isabella? Just so you know, it’s not like it’s my hobby or anything. You sure you aren’t overreacting?”
My bad. I just can’t think of any other reason a merchant would need a whip. “Well if it’s not your hobby, then do you use it for work? Like for some kind of outrageous part-time job…”
“I use it to drive the wagon… and what’s that about an outrageous part-time job?! Even carriage coachmen need to use them to drive the horses. You need to be careful though due to the whip’s length, cause if you’re not careful you’ll end up hitting yourself or others. It takes a lot of practice to use it properly.”
It was a more sensible reason than I expected!! Sorry. Sorry for all the crazy suspicions I had about you, Ursch-kun. And, more than anything else… “Ursch, even though you don’t have any interest in other people, it seems you are quite considerate when it comes to not hitting them with your whip.”
“Um, Isabella? Do I look like someone who enjoys whipping other people? Am I really that questionable in your eyes, Isabella?”
Sorry again. Certainly, you wouldn’t go that far. Even though you’re still a little black-hearted. He’s definitely not someone who would whip another human being. Despite that bit of darkness in him. But I can still see him whipping someone else though, especially now that I’ve gotten to know him a little bit better…
Oh no, even though he’s smiling at me, there’s a black aura swelling around him. D-does he know what I’m thinking just from my facial expressions again? Okay then, before he gets mad, time for a subject change☆ “So you need to get up really early for wagon driving practice?”
Ursch-kun returned to his previously good-natured smile at my question. “I’ll let that slide this time, but don’t think you’ll get away with it everytime~”
S-so scary!! He totally hit the nail on the head!! Ursch-kun is only 6-years old, but I still don’t have any confidence that I can win against him!! Even though I’ve reached the level cap I doubt I could even win against him in a mental battle!!
“Since I’m the son of the company’s head, there’s not really much need for me to learn as the employees usually drive the carts. But since you wanted to be a peddler with me, I thought I should get practicing.” So he’s doing it for when we’re married… Heehee, I’m feeling a little embarrassed now. Thank you. “Isabella, would you rather work for a branch of the Schneiver Company if I got an offer to do so, or go independent~?”
“Eh? Why are you asking me to make the decision? You’re the one who has a job right now, so I’m fine with whatever you’d like to do. No matter what you choose, I’ve already decided to stay together with you.” I can use magic, and Ursch-kun is pretty sly, so I feel like we can make it anywhere.
“Even now you still want to stay together with me? You haven’t changed your mind about becoming my wife?”
“Of course not! No matter how dark your true personality might be, nor how much we might have to travel while living the life of a peddler, my feelings will never change. I’d rather you not misjudge me so.” Moreover, after spending time with Ursch-kun today, I realized that his personality isn’t anywhere near as bad as I first thought it was. He’s just really protective of me and wants to shield me from those who’d try to take advantage of me. Ursch-kun was more than capable of deceiving me, but he didn’t. If I had to guess, wouldn’t it be because he wanted our relationship to be built on mutual trust? The mere thought of it is causing me to fall in love with him all over again. I’ll never abandon you Ursch-kun!
“Ahaha~ That makes me so happy. If that’s how you really feel about me, Isabella, then I’m really thankful to have met someone like you.”
As I stared at my smiling Ursch-kun, I heard a small scream from Marie-chan in front of us, followed by an angry voice. “You twat! ‘The hell are you doin’?! ‘Cause of you, my catch is ruined!! Now I have to sell it for less!!” Caught off guard by the voice, Marie-chan found herself surrounded by three burly, yelling men.
I messed up, I have no idea what even happened! I was so distracted by Ursch-kun’s smile that I didn’t see anything that happened with Marie-chan!!
“Your absentminded maid bumped into one of those adventurers, sending the catch he had slung over his shoulder to the ground. Its horn, which they were going to use as both an ingredient and proof of their subjugation, broke when it hit the ground.”
You’re amazing, Ursch-kun!! You’re tailing Marie-chan better than me!! Also, isn’t this situation completely her fault?! Marie-chan, you, you’re not the clumsy character archetype, you know?! Just what are you doing?!
One of the irate adventurers, a particularly short-tempered middle-aged man, raised his fist to Marie-chan. Wai-!! Old man!! I know you’re mad, but a brawny guy like yourself shouldn’t be punching a young lady!! One little mistake and you’ll kill her!! I knew I needed to do something, but I didn’t know what. In my scramble, I accidently sent power to my eyes and something like [spirit] or [soul]… anyway [something] came out of my eyes. I mean, I had no idea what that [something] was, just [something] came out!! Some kind of energy-whatzit from my eyes!!
Then that energy I emitted affected everyone within my field of vision. Which of course, my field of vision included not only the three burly adventurers, but also the young maid, Marie-chan, and even the adventurers who’d come out of the guild to rubberneck after hearing the commotion.
Now then, there were a few problems with that. The most important being the person who received the full effects of the mysterious energy. Yes, it was Marie-chan. After getting hit by the mysterious energy, Marie-chan lost consciousness, and the rest of the people went completely rigid.
Nuuoooo!! Isabella, you idiot!! You were supposed to save Marie-chan, not knock her out!! Now she was between a rock and a hard place with nowhere to run!! Retreat!! Retreat!! As soon as we grab her, retreat!! I quickly closed the distance between me and the unconscious Marie-chan.
“Wha?! Instantaneous Movement skill?!” Surprised voices came from the rubberneckers who were just far enough out of my field of vision to not be affected by the petrification.
It’s not the Instantaneous Movement skill!! I’m not that inhuman yet!! I can just dash 50 meters a second!! Stop the commotion!! I could just carry Marie-chan away like this, but it was her fault the adventurer’s catch was ruined and devalued, so I should probably compensate them, shouldn’t I? And if they recognized her as a maid of house Rottenstein, they may directly lodge a complaint later.
But you see… I have no money on me. As the daughter of a duke, I never needed to carry money around for myself. And my 【Closet】 only contained items. Items? Maybe I could replace his catch with an item of similar value?
(Item Sorting Complete) Okay, this seems to be worth a fair amount. Hopefully giving him some useless “Drop Item” I have multiples of will do the trick!! And as for why a drop item, if I gave him an item I purchased from Ursch-kun—something loaded with all sorts of magical effects and augments—it’d cause a huge uproar, I’m sure. But if it’s a drop item, it should be common enough that other people have it, right? Probably.
I shoved my hand beneath the hem of my dress to make it seem as if the weapon I was taking out from my 【Closet】 had been kept down there all along. The item I produced was a “Mithril Jamadhar”. Now that’s a Fantasy World for you!! Mithril exists here!! Mithil was a radiant silver fantasy ore that surpassed even the strongest steel and could be imbued with magic. And the “Jamadhar” item was a katar, a knuckle duster kind of weapon with a dagger attached: ideal for stabbing. An item that could be used for self defence such as this shouldn’t be too out of place under a Duke’s daughter’s skirt. And since it’s made of mithril, it should be pricey.
I gently stabbed it into the ground between Marie-chan and the adventurers, and apologized to the scary adventurers. “Th…this is compen-sation. Proof of apolo-gy. Take it, okay.” I was so nervous my words came out stilted!! And I didn’t even sound apologetic!!
The adventurers were stunned by the series of events, so after I said my piece, I quickly scooped Marie-chan up in a princess carry. Now was my chance to hightail it out of here.
As I turned around and prepared to bolt, I heard the adventurer raise his voice after coming back his senses behind me. “Wait!! Little missy! Wait a damn minute!!” Grr!! It didn’t work. Now that it’s come to this, running away would be my win!!
I didn’t know the proper value for his catch, but I did leave him some compensation, so he shouldn’t chase me this fa…he’s chasing me!! I picked up my pace in a panic. This is bad! This is bad! This is bad! Carrying someone as big as Marie-chan, what with my body only being that of a normal six-year old, meant her legs were left hanging awkwardly, making running all out impossible!! I mean, physically speaking, I could run perfectly fine, but running with Marie-chan’s legs flopping ungainly about ruined my stride. This is seriously bad!!
With that handicap in this situation, I could only run at half-speed, so I couldn’t increase the gap!! A little noble girl running through the city with an adult maid in her arms, being chased by three burly adventurers… What even is this situation?! This is way too conspicuous!! Just give up already!! Stop chasing me!!
Just when I felt a few tears prick the corners of my eyes, a tremendous explosion resounded from behind, followed by a strong blast of wind hitting my back. The force of the wind blew my hair out in front of me, and only thanks to promptly bracing myself did I manage to avoid being knocked down. I was so surprised, I actually stopped and turned around only to see the fallen adventurers all on their rears. And standing before the smashed stone pavement was an imposing figure holding a whip in one hand, Ursch-kun.
Noticing I had stopped in my tracks, Ursch-kun gave my back a small pat, “Okay, while the adventurers are still sitting on the ground, now’s our chance to escape.” He smiled as he urged me forward.
“…… Ursch…” Doing as I was told, I spoke to Ursch-kun as we ran.
“What is it?”
“I don’t suppose you happen to remember our conversation from before, the one where you said it was common sense to not turn your whip towards other people?”
“No worries! Since I~did~not~hit~them~”
“[I did not hit them] and [I did not feel like hitting them] are two very different things, you know?”
No no, ‘that’s true~’ isn’t gonna cut it. That was way too much power just to slow them down. If he’d hit them they would have die-……hmm? “Ursch, just how much power did you put into that whip? Or are you just that strong?”
“Eh? I don’t really have all that much strength. I made this whip while practicing alchemy to make “magic items”, so that’s why it has some special effects.”
Ursch-kun… You were already crafting those “magic imbued items” at a mere 6-years of age, weren’t you?
Awakening in the parlor at Ursch-kun’s home with no memories of the events leading to it, Marie-chan had a small panic attack. After hearing the details from Ursch-kun, she groveled with the force of a thousand apologies. “Please forgive my inexcusable transgressions, My Lady! I was so preoccupied with my personal problems that not only did I neglect the task I was given, I involved the Young Lady in a disturbance of my own making and even with compensating others for the damage I caused on my behalf!”
“It wouldn’t be that unusual to be fired over this, you know.” Marie-chan’s complexion went pale after hearing just that one word from Ursch-kun, tears welling up in her eyes.
Of course, just hearing that details that “a maid who damages the catch of some burly adventurers and faints, not only burdening the young mistress she works for with the responsibility of interacting and compensating said adventurers, but also with carrying the aforementioned swooning maid to safety,” These facts alone would be grounds for immediate dismissal. However, leaving the explanation at that left a lot to the imagination and I wanted to avoid getting Marie-chan fired.
First off, it was odd that I, a duke’s daughter, was there to begin with. Marie-chan isn’t at fault for that. Plus, Marie-chan fainting was my fault although I still have no idea how I did it. With regards to the compensation, honestly, with the other party not looking too pleased with it, you can’t really say I handled it all that well. And as for carrying her around, I didn’t feel particularly burdened with my maxed out HP.
…but, with Marie-chan’s legs flopping around as I carried her away, it looked like they whacked quite a few things on the way… Marie-chan had regained consciousness but she found herself unable to stand from the pain in her ankles. When we removed her stockings, we saw extensive bruising indicating copious bleeding under the skin, as well as considerable levels of swelling. Something…is definitely broken…right? Frankly, I thought there would be more damage to her head.
No matter how many cheat powers I possessed, I was worthless at actually using them, and they didn’t make anything better. “Forgive me, Marie. Are your legs all right? I’ll give you an HP Potion(recovery medicine), so drink it and your injuries will heal, okay?”
Marie-chan looked at me in surprise after hearing what I said. “My Lady… you knew the name of a servant like me—no, I mean, not that—you would give such a precious medicine to me?”
I nodded, and tried to hand her the medicine, but Ursch-kun stopped me. “Isabella, I think perhaps you’ve misunderstood the purpose of an HP Potion(recovery medicine)? A potion(recovery medicine) can recover your physical strength, but it can’t heal wounds, you know?”
What…did he say? What? But game-wise, doesn’t drinking HP recovery medicine allow you to recuperate and continue fighting no matter what attacks you suffer? And should you run out of potions, don’t you just swap to healing via Holy Recovery magic instead? Aren’t potions and recovery magic one and the same?!
“An HP Potion (Recovery Medicine) will only recover ‘HP’, which is a term encompassing physical strength, explosive power, and stamina in the so-called ‘power system’. That’s why a Potion (Recovery Medicine) will fully recover one’s HP but do nothing to either heal wounds or staunch bleeding. After all, “HP (physical strength) Recovery Medicine isn’t “Healing Medicine”.
“Then, what do we do when someone is injured?”
“That’s where holy magic-users like healers and priests come in. The HP recovery medicine can at least keep you alive until you can seek their help. After all, the injured might not make it if they have no physical strength left. Just chugging down potions won’t work in the long run as they can’t staunch the bleeding and one’s HP will continue to steadily decrease if the bleeding is severe.” Wow, a major difference from the game indeed!! So this is the difference between a game and reality. “… That being said, Marie’s legs need to get treated ASAP.”
At the reminder, I crumpled into a defeated heap before Marie-chan. Seeing how dejected I was, Ursch-kun rubbed my back gently. “Everything will be all right, Isabella. I have holy magic and can use healing spells, so I can treat her quickly.”
So Ursch-kun did as he said and cast healing magic upon Marie-chan’s legs. A myriad of white magic circles rose to the surface of Marie-chan’s swollen legs and, like gears, they began to rotate. The spinning magic circles were beautifully delicate, as if crafted out of lace. As the magic circles spun and sparkled, the bruises under Marie-chan’s skin disappeared, and her swollen ankles returned to their original thin and pretty state.
Marie-chan looked on in awe as the pain and swelling subsided. Once the magic circles vanished, it was time to check and ensure she had no problems standing. After confirming her complete recovery—and giving a million thanks to Ursch-kun—she hastily donned her stockings, her face scarlet. Marie-chan must be embarrassed to be seen with bare feet. Sorry we forced you to take your stockings off.
“Ursch! Thank you so much for healing Marie!! You are truly amazing!! The white magic circles were quite beautiful!!” I got to my feet as Ursch-kun laughed shyly, his bangs swaying to and fro.
“It makes me happy that I got to show off my good side to you. Well, now that the maid’s wounds are healed, it’s probably best for you to leave my house. A witch lives here after all.”
“A witch? There’s a witch here in Ursch-kun’s house?” In my mind, I imagined a witch stirring a cauldron of green, bubbling liquid. She isn’t making a potion by chance, is she?
“It’s probably different than you’re imagining, Isabella, but she does live here, that witch. We’re fine since she hasn’t `emerged` from the bedroom yet, but… she’ll come out sooner rather than later. I sent one of our employees to the Rottenstein manor to let them know you were here, so someone should be arriving soon, I think.”
My brain short-circuited at those words. If they reported to the mansion then… everyone in the mansion, including my family, would know I secretly snuck out!! “Ursch!! When they come for me, would you please inform them that I was never here? I’d much prefer if you could inform them that [an employee of the Schneiver company] was the one who took care of Marie. Then I can use that time to return to the mansion.”
“Huh?! You’re gonna go back by yourself? That’s too dangerous, you should just wait until they come to pick you up. And why would you even want me to tell them you’re not here in the first place?”
At the very least, to get Ursch-kun on board with my lie, I bowed my head to him and pleaded, “The thing is, I secretly snuck out of the mansion…and they’re gonna be so mad…”
“Just let it happen…You know you can’t be doing such dangerous things. After all, you’re so beautiful you never know when some creeps might target you. It makes me worried, you know?.” Ugh, Ursch-kun’s worried face filled me with remorse, but even so I didn’t want to get caught. Especially by a certain specific family member…
Regardless of my previous life’s memories, it’s not like my time as the original Isabella for the past 6 years just disappeared. On the contrary, both my previous and current life experiences were merged together. My former Japanese self was pretty much like any other inactive indoor otaku-type. I never let anything show on my face, not even when I was overly excited. But after merging with Isabella, all manner of emotions exposed themselves intensely on my face with little provocation, and I became the impetuous sort who acted before thinking it through .
The merge wasn’t just limited to my personality; the people and things the original Isabella had a hard time dealing with were also included. Yes, within my family who treated like me like a little princess and spoiled me rotten, there was one particularly harsh member that did not treat me kindly. Isabella never got along with him. That said, it went deeper than a simple ‘didn’t get along’. It was better to call him a source of terror. Needless to say, despite having regained my previous life’s memories, I still didn’t like him all that much. He was the one person I didn’t want finding out about my little excursion.
“Hear me out, Ursch. Can’t you let it go just this one time? If possible, I’d like to avoid my second brother Dae-” And speaking of the devil, the door to the reception room flew open, and two burly men burst in.
“Bella!! What am I going to do with you?! How could you have been so reckless!!”
“──Father?! And… my brother Daemon?! Why is Daemon here?!” The one who practically leaped through the door was none other than my father. And just behind him, looming somewhat menacingly, my second brother Daemon. First of all, Father being here was fine. The problem lay with my second brother, with his dreadful face and imposing visage. Of my two brothers, he was the one who belonged to the Order of Imperial Knights, Daemon Zak Rottenstein.
This man right here was the man Isabella feared the most. From an early age, the rambunctious and tomboyish Isabella would suffer heavy-handed punishments devised by him. These included, and were not limited to, being strung upside down from a tree, doing crawling laps under a 30-33cm high barbed wire enclosure on the mansion’s grounds, even during a total downpour, to name a few—extreme methods that would be considered harsh even for a nobleman’s son, let alone a nobleman’s daughter! I’m calling Child Services!!
With a brother like this, how did Isabella become a villainess in the first place? It doesn’t make sense!I Isn’t Isabella in the game supposed to be an idiot, some single-celled organism?! No, now was not the time to be thinking about the game’s Isabella!! I need to figure a way out of this situation!! At this rate, it was highly possible this demon brother of mine was going to try a new punishment method on me, something along the lines of “Escape Practice: Hog-tied and tossed into a pond”!!
Aahh! What do I d-d-d-d-do?! C-can I trick him… No, how would I even explain-!! Geez!! Sinking steadily into a state of panic, my brain finally short-circuited and I──
Busted through the glass window and booked it out of there.
“”Whaaaaat?! What are you doing?! Bella!!””
“Huh?! Isabella?!” I heard the surprised voices of all the men behind me as I bolted. Ah, that might have been the first time I heard Ursch-kun’s flustered voice.
In the middle of the night, on my knees in the hallway, I was scolded by my brother Daemon for 2 hours. Seeing the young lady of the house on her knees in the hallway was enough to stop the butler, Shaun-san, in his tracks. Adding that to being in the entrance hall in full view of all the on-looking employees as my brother went on and on with great emphasis on how I “not only should not have been alone with that male commoner”, I should not have been “breaking and jumping out of glass windows at his house” and because of my misconduct, “none of you should be treating this girl as a lady of the house”. It was akin to a public execution .
Personally, I think this is even worse than the public condemnation and engagement annulment event. By the way, this public humiliation is currently taking place at two in the morning. As for why my brother Daemon, who should be working in the palace for the Order of Imperial Knights, is here right now, that would be because everyone in the mansion freaked out way more than I thought they would when I was discovered missing.
And my father, being the Prime Minister, was working in the palace when he was notified of my disappearance. After hearing the message, and recalling the difficulties his employees had recently experienced while attempting to find or catch me, he sighed. “I’m sure my second son in the Imperial Knights is up to the task”. And thus, they came back home together.
Even with my brother was organizing a large search party, I was nowhere to be found in the mansion. And when they were starting to get restless at their failure to locate me, the Schneiver employee arrived just in time to report I was with the maid. After hearing the full details, Father fainted. I’m getting the feeling Father is fainting more often these days. Hang in there, Papa.
Knowing I’d most certainly run away and well aware that it’d be almost impossible just for him and our employees to successfully nab me at the Schneiver house, Daemon smartly solicited the aid of his off-duty juniors and subordinates in the Order in capturing his runaway little sister. The five Imperial Knights that answered his call initially wondered what all the fuss over a 6-year old noble girl was all about, but in the end they were unable to catch me. It didn’t take long for them to realize the seriousness of the situation and get down to business. They even called in all their other off-duty comrades to give them a hand.
As the number of Imperial Knights chasing me down steadily increased, I began running away in earnest. With me going all out, they began to round up more knight acquaintances, and this vicious cycle turned into an all-out manhunt. Under pursuit from all these brawny Imperial Knights and Knight Corps, my fear meter hit MAX level, and I freely used my《Omnidirectional Movement》skill to frantically sprint and weave my way through the buildings downtown.
The uproar caused by the knights trying to catch me as I bounded around here and there caught the attention of the adventurers who thought it looked like a good time, and joined in the fun. It caused a huge commotion throughout the entire town starting in the evening and lasting through the night. Also, when the adventurers chasing me tried to bring me down, a group branched off and tried to help me get away, causing even more confusion.
Treating this brouhaha lightly, as if it were any other festival in town, food stall sales increased everywhere. In the end, however, the one who finally caught me was none other than Ursch-kun. As I was feeling increasingly driven into a corner by all these huge, strapping adults, there stood Ursch-kun waving at me, an angelic smile filling his face as he did so. I jumped into his arms without a second thought. The next moment, I found myself tied up with the whip he had been hiding behind his back. And of course, Ursch-kun’s whip was a specialized Magic Item. Even with my ridiculous strength, I couldn’t break free. What is up with that whip, so scary!
That day, amongst various things, word spread around of the Rottenstein’s youngest daughter, Isabella: “Seen running around town in an extravagant and hard-to-move-in dress, able to scale tall walls and leap between buildings. Even the Imperial Knights, Knight Corps and the adventurers all failed to capture her. The only one who could was her fiance.”
And thus for the townspeople who hadn’t witnessed the entire fiasco, the Imperial Knights, Knight Corps, and the adventurers became quite the hot topic. Yes, that’s right. Now everyone is aware of my “fiance”, Ursch-kun. However, it would have been great if the circulating gossip had been limited to only that fact. Especially since it reached the ears of people like my uncle, the King, the Head of the Imperial Knights, the Head of the Mages, and the Master of the Adventurer’s Guild.
